I, for one, refuse to toe the company line or drink the juice being spewed from the Ball State athletic department, and unfortunately, Brady Hoke that this game is not in our overall interest, financially or program-wise.
We've said all along that to be the best, we've got to beat the best. All Ball State ever wanted was to be recognized for having a great football program. The opportunity went to new heights when the Humanitarian Bowl reached out to us to try to get a Boise State-Ball State matchup.
Instead, Ball State pussed its way out of this. Plain and simple.
You want drama? You want action? You want national attention between two of the top three non-BCS teams who could go mano-a-mano? It's a dream matchup for both teams, for the nation and for both fan bases (don't listen to Boise State's fans because I'm willing to bet Ian Johnson and company would love a shot at Ball State in a battle of the unbeatens).
Look, I understand WHY Ball State said no. The financial implications would've been astrononical. Keeping everybody in hotels for five days, airplane ride for the team, blah blah blah, I get it. But it terms of the progress of the football program, it's a killer. And isn't that is most important?
Everyone's looking at us like a bunch of pussies who didn't want to strain in a game or come close to blemishing our undefeated record. When Bubba Cunningham was our AD, he said he wanted Ball State to be the front porch of the university.
Now, wouldn't being 13-0 and playing a 12-0 Boise State team in the biggest bowl outside of the BCS (and you could argue, better than the BCS game that will involve Cincinnati) put us in that prime position to do it? Any money lost on it would be well worth it.
Would it be a road game? Yes. Remember Fresno State coach Pat Hill's motto? "Anytime, anyplace, anywhere." This is our first year in the national spotlight. If we wanted to get back there next year and try to get in a BCS game, playing this game and beating Boise in Boise would've done it. In case you forgot, we would have the best player on the field. Now, the media — and everyone outside of our little Ball State nook — look at us as a bunch of cowards, and I am almost inclined to agree.
Shame on you, Tom Collins. This decision falls on you. I'm sorry that a battle of unbeatens in a huge bowl game with all of the national spotlight on us wasn't good enough. A win would've more than made up for the financial loss. Yes, it would've turned out to be a road game. Yes, Boise State somewhat bullied us. But you know what? In the non-BCS world, they've earned it. They are where we want to be. And Ball State missed the biggest opportunity possible to do that.
Let's say Ball U were to have gone in there and beats Boise or it's a close loss. If Nate comes back...where would that have set us up next year? Top 15 preseason if not better, not to mention the Boise game fresh on everyone's minds. We could've ruled the roost in the non-BCS teams. Instead, we're a bunch of pansies who looked like we're too scared to play Boise State.
Don't give me the financial bullshit or the fact that beating another non-BCS team would only hurt our standing. A win puts us in prime BCS position for next year and, oh, a $14 million payday, which would've more than recouped the financial losses from the H-Bowl.
Would our fans not get to see us play? Sure. I can't afford the $600 round trip ticket plus three days in the hotel. But don't we want to set ourselves up for the future? I don't understand why nearly everyone on BSUFans is toeing the university line and wants to play in the Motor City Bowl or (puke) GMAC Bowl against Minnesota, NC State, Rutgers or whoever else.
Instead, we're running scared in the eyes of everyone else.
Do you think Central Michigan would've passed on this game?
I don't think so.

Financial bullshit???? Then write the check pal!! If money is no object, then get your checkbook out and cut a check to the Ball State Athletic Department.
Until Ball State starts putting butts in seats at bowl games then attending bowl games that are 2000+ miles away will continue to be a risk that the university will not eat.
If you're pissed off about not going to Boise, then make sure you and everyone you know have a ticket to whatever bowl game we're in this year. Prove that we can travel. This won't be our last visit to the Top 20.
Totally agree with you on the blog. Several BSU fans like this poster are why we will always be a small time program until we step up to challenges like this. ESPN was going to fork over alot of cash to make it work but our administration fucked us over.
Who says Mr Friend hasnt forked over a check to BSU? BSU putting butts in seats at bowl games...we haven't played in 1 bowl game in the past decade so please dont act like this is a regular occurance. In our bowl last year we were a 7-5team with barely any following...this year we are 12-0 with alot more followers...nationally ranked...getting pub from all media outlets and we had a chance to prove we belong in the BCS hunt by taking on Boise there!
Our fans act like this will happen every year...we wont be a top 25 team every year...I hope we are but for god sake take chances!
Hey, Phil write the check!! OK, that's not second grade.
I as myself are not a public institution with a $14 million budget or whatever it is. Nor am I a public school. Can't say I have a million to throw around. My financial argument is that playing Boise and beating them would pay for itself next year ... which of course you chose to ignore.
And as for the Top 20, I'm looking for us to position ourselves for next year. If we go there and beat them, and Nate comes back...we're top 15 no problem. Now, I don't know.
I keep seeing all this "ESPN was going to fork over a lot of cash" bullshit and am wondering if there is any truth behind this... Give me some real numbers and stop basing arguments off hearsay.
And don't post anonymously.
Sorry, Phil, you missed the mark badly here. This was a lousy deal from every angle -- including competitively -- that Boise was trying to jam down our throat. We made numerous efforts to accomodate this game, and Boise would have none of it. Hell, even THEY don't want to play in their own bowl game... they're trying to swing a deal to play in sunny San Diego instead.
We don't let a WAC program dictate terms to us. Period. The fact that Boise was trying to strong-arm Ball State into taking the deal before we even played the MAC Championship game (thus screwing us if we lost, since our acceptance would be contingent on a MACC win, but our acceptance would cause the other bowls to fill their slots) tells you it was lousy. Lousy for the team, lousy for the fans, lousy for the program's future.
No AD in the country would have caved to Boise's outrageous demands. Quite contrary to your thesis, playing this game in Boise without some major, MAJOR coin (I'm talking seven-figure coin) coming our way would have been "pussing out."
And forgive me if I don't see where the cavalcade of national respect would have come from after a hypothetical win. Most BCS-swayed media types still believe that Boise's win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl was nothing but a fluke. If we win, it's not "damn, Ball State is good," it's "damn, how overrated was Boise!" Likewise, a loss to another non-BCS team, no matter how highly ranked, in no way helps this program.
Phil...you missed the mark here. It's not as if Boise State is doing us some big favor here. We're undefeated too so in any case they were the ones that were being cowards...refusing to play us at a nuetral site. Ball State can not sacrifice the well being of the programs future for one bowl game. It is just simply not a good plan. I wanted to see this game very badly but it is just not in the best interest if the game is going to be played in Boise. Now, Ball can go to the motor city bowl...bring a ton of fans and continue to build the program and the fan base. It's easy to sit back and say what the university or the ahtletic deparment should have done...it's not as easy to crunch the numbers and make it work. By the way...ESPN didn't give a shit of this game happened. They just bought the rights to the BCS games in the next couple years...and you think they care about the Humanitarian bowl...give me a break!
Phil,
I see your side of the argument but I do agree with BSU's decision. Right now BSU has a great shot of finishing the season 14-0 with a Bowl win assuming every goes as planned. This will set the Cards up for next year with a gauranteed spot in the preseason top 25. That was the problem this year, they started to low in the early weeks. Yes, a win against Boise State would be freakin' amazing however a loss (which is most likely) would send BSU far down the rankings.
Ball State's decision was the safe route especially with the financial situation. However keep in mind that if Nate Davis takes off for the NFL then all this talk is moot because he is everything to that offense and without him BSU is an 8-4 or even a 7-5 squad.
Just my two cents. I'm glad we care enough to write about our Fighting Cards!!!
